What is JARDIANCE used for?
JARDIANCE is a SGLT2 inhibitor and is used for the following:
- Type 2 diabetes in people age 10 years and older
- Lowering the risk of death due to heart problems in adults with Type 2 diabetes and heart disease
- Lowering the risk of hospitalization and death due to heart problems in adults with heart failure
- Lowering the risk of worsening kidney problems, hospitalization, and death due to heart problems in adults with CKD
How does JARDIANCE work?
JARDIANCE is a sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor. It works in the kidneys to prevent sugar and sodium (salt) from absorbing back into your body. For Type 2 diabetes: It lowers blood sugar by causing your body to get rid of excess sugar through your urine. For heart failure and CKD: By preventing sodium reabsorption, the heart fills with blood easier and pumps blood more easily throughout the body. This might also improve blood flow through the kidneys and lower the stress on these organs to help slow the worsening of CKD.
How do I take JARDIANCE?
- JARDIANCE is typically started at 10 mg by mouth once daily in the morning
- For Type 2 diabetes, your provider might raise your dose to 25 mg once daily depending on how well the medication is working for you

JARDIANCE is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. Common side effects of JARDIANCE:
- Urinary tract infections
- Vaginal yeast infection in females
- Upper respiratory tract infection
- High cholesterol or fat levels in your blood
- Urinating more than usual
JARDIANCE Serious Side Effects
Serious side effects are rare with JARDIANCE. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following.
- Severe allergic reaction: swelling in the face, throat, tongue, or mouth; rash; trouble breathing
- High ketone levels in the blood: nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, tiredness, thirsty, dry mouth, fruity breath, trouble breathing
Effects of other drugs, drug classes and over-the-counter products on JARDIANCE
The following medications may interact with JARDIANCE:
- Coadministration of JARDIANCE with diuretics resulted in increased urine volume and frequency of voids, which might enhance the potential for volume depletion
- The risk of hypoglycemia is increased when JARDIANCE is used in combination with insulin secretagogues (e.g., sulfonylurea) or insulin
- Concomitant use of an SGLT2 inhibitor with lithium may decrease serum lithium concentrations
