empagliflozin Uses, Side Effects, Interactions, Warnings & Dosing
What dosages is empagliflozin available in?
empagliflozin is available as a 10 mg and 25 mg oral tablet.
What is empagliflozin used for?
empagliflozin is a SGLT2 inhibitor and is used for the following:
- Type 2 diabetes in people age 10 years and older
- Lowering the risk of death due to heart problems in adults with Type 2 diabetes and heart disease
- Lowering the risk of hospitalization and death due to heart problems in adults with heart failure
- Lowering the risk of worsening kidney problems, hospitalization, and death due to heart problems in adults with CKD
How does empagliflozin work?
empagliflozin is a sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor. It works in the kidneys to prevent sugar and sodium (salt) from absorbing back into your body. For Type 2 diabetes: It lowers blood sugar by causing your body to get rid of excess sugar through your urine. For heart failure and CKD: By preventing sodium reabsorption, the heart fills with blood easier and pumps blood more easily throughout the body. This might also improve blood flow through the kidneys and lower the stress on these organs to help slow the worsening of CKD.
How do I take empagliflozin?
- empagliflozin is typically started at 10 mg by mouth once daily in the morning
- For Type 2 diabetes, your provider might raise your dose to 25 mg once daily depending on how well the medication is working for you
