How does INVEGA work?
INVEGA is an atypical antipsychotic. It affects dopamine and serotonin levels in your brain, which helps to control your thoughts, mood, and behaviors.
How do I take INVEGA?
INVEGA is typically dosed as 6 mg by mouth once daily. The typical dosing range is 3 mg to 12 mg once daily.
Your dose might differ if you’re an older adult or if you have kidney problems.
Is it safe for me to take INVEGA?
INVEGA is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. You should not use this medication if you have a known hypersensitivity to paliperidone, risperidone, or to any excipients in INVEGA.
INVEGA Common Side Effects
Common side effects of INVEGA include:
- Abnormal muscle movements
- Drowsiness
- Headache
- Irregular heart beat
- Vomiting
- Anxiety
INVEGA Serious Side Effects
Serious side effects are rare with INVEGA. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following.
- Neuroleptic malignant syndrome: high fever, muscle stiffness, confusion, sweating, changes in pulse, heart rate, changes in blood pressure
- Tardive dyskinesia: uncontrolled muscle movements, such as facial grimacing, lip-smacking, blinking
- Extremely high blood sugar levels: feeling very hungry or thirsty, urinating more often, stomach pain, weakness, fruity-smelling breath
- Priapism: painful erection that that lasts longer than 4 hours
- Difficulty swallowing
- Seizures
Effects of other drugs, drug classes and over-the-counter products on INVEGA
The following medications may interact with INVEGA:
- Centrally-acting drugs: Due to CNS effects, use caution in combination. Avoid alcohol
- Drugs that may cause orthostatic hypotension: An additive effect may be observed when co-administered with INVEGA
- Strong CYP3A4/P-glycoprotein (P-gp) inducers: It may be necessary to increase the dose of INVEGA when a strong inducer of both CYP3A4 and P-gp (e.g., carbamazepine) is co-administered. Conversely, on discontinuation of the strong inducer, it may be necessary to decrease the dose of INVEGA
- Co-administration of divalproex sodium: Increased Cmax and AUC of paliperidone by approximately 50%. Adjust dose of INVEGA if necessary based on clinical assessment

Is INVEGA safe in pregnancy?
INVEGA may cause extrapyramidal and/or withdrawal symptoms in neonates with third trimester exposure. Talk with your doctor before starting this medication if you are or become pregnant. There is a pregnancy exposure registry that monitors pregnancy outcomes in women exposed to INVEGA, during pregnancy. Healthcare providers are encouraged to register patients by contacting the National Pregnancy Registry for Atypical 33 Antipsychotics at 1-866-961-2388 or online at women’s mental health
