What is Hygroton used for?

Hygroton is a diuretic (water pill) and is used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure), and swelling from fluids (edema) caused by heart failure, kidney problems, liver problems, or corticosteroid and estrogen therapy.

How does Hygroton work?

Hygroton is a thiazide-like diuretic (water pill) that makes you urinate more. It works in the kidneys to remove extra water and certain electrolytes, while lowering blood pressure and getting rid of swelling.

How do I take Hygroton?

Hygroton is typically dosed as 25 mg by mouth once daily for hypertension. If needed, your physician will adjust your dose. The maximum dose is 100 mg once daily. For swelling, the typical starting dose is 50 mg to 100 mg by mouth once daily. If needed, your provider will adjust your dose. The maximum dose is 200 mg once daily.

The following medications may interact with Hygroton:

  • Antihypertensive drugs – Chlorthalidone may add to or potentiate the action of other antihypertensive drugs
  • Lithium – Lithium renal clearance is reduced by chlorthalidone, increasing the risk of lithium toxicity
