Halaven is the brand name for eribulin mesylate and is available for intravenous use.

Halaven is available as 1 mg per 2 mL (0.5 mg per mL) of eribulin mesylate in a single-dose vial.

Halaven is a chemotherapy that’s used to treat cancers, such as metastatic breast cancer and liposarcoma (a type of soft tissue cancer).

Halaven is a microtubule inhibitor. It works by stopping microtubules in the body’s cells from working. When the medication blocks the microtubules in cancer cells, the cells can’t grow as easily and can die off.

Administer 1.4 mg/m2 of Halaven intravenously over 2 to 5 minutes on Days 1 and 8 of a 21-day cycle.

Halaven is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you.

Common side effects of Halaven:

• Low blood cell counts
• Fatigue
• Hair loss
• Feeling numbness or tingling
• Nausea
• Constipation

Serious side effects are rare with Halaven. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following:

• Infections (as a result of having low white blood cell counts): fever, chills, cough, pain or burning when urinating
• Abnormal heart rhythms: new pounding or fluttering heartbeat, lightheadedness, dizziness, chest pain

There are no major drug interactions listed for this medication. However, always let your physician and pharmacist know about any other medications or supplements (including prescribed and over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and dietary or herbal supplements) that you are currently taking.

Halaven can harm your unborn baby. Tell your doctor right away if you become pregnant or think you are pregnant during treatment. Females who are able to become pregnant should use an effective birth control during treatment and for at least 2 weeks after the final dose. Males should use an effective form of birth control when having sex with female partners who are able to become pregnant during treatment and for 3 1/2 months (14 weeks) after the final dose.
