What is Fareston used for?
Fareston is a type of hormone therapy used in the treatment of metastatic breast cancer in postmenopausal women with estrogen-receptor positive or unknown tumors.
How does Fareston work?
Fareston is a selective estrogen receptor modulator. Some breast cancers rely on the hormone estrogen to grow and are called hormone-receptor positive (HR+). Fareston blocks estrogen from working on breast tissue. By doing this, cancer cells don’t have the fuel they need to grow, which stops breast cancer from growing and spreading.
How do I take Fareston?
The typical dose of Fareston is 60 mg once daily.
Is it safe for me to take Fareston?
Fareston is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. You should not use this medication in the following:
- Hypersensitivity to the drug
- QT Prolongation
- Hypokalemia
- Hypomagnesemia

- Hot flashes
- Sweating
- Nausea
- Vaginal discharge
- Cataracts
- Dry eyes
Fareston Serious Side Effects
Serious side effects are rare with Fareston. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following:
- Abnormal heart rhythm: feel your heart beating, weakness, blurred vision, lightheadedness
- Cancers of the uterus: abnormal vaginal bleeding, vaginal discharge, or pain or pressure in the area below your belly button (pelvis)
- Blood clots in your veins or lungs: pain or swelling in your arms or legs, trouble breathing, chest pain, fast heartbeat
Effects of other drugs, drug classes and over-the-counter products on Fareston
The following medications may interact with Fareston:
- Drugs that decrease renal calcium excretion, likee thiazide diuretics
- Medications that prolong the QT interval
- Strong CYP3A4 inducers
- Strong CYP3A4 inhibitors
- CYP2C9 substrates with a narrow therapeutic index such as warfarin or
- Phenytoin
