Emgality is a monoclonal antibody and is used for the following:
- Migraine prevention
- Episodic (occasional) cluster headaches
How does Emgality work?
Emgality is a monoclonal antibody. It blocks a protein in your body called calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) ligand. Your nerves release CGRPs during migraine attacks and cluster headaches. CGRPs cause the blood vessels in your brain to swell, which can lead to pain. When Emgality blocks these proteins, it can prevent migraines and ease pain from cluster headaches.
How do I take Emgality?
Emgality is dosed as following:
- Migraine prevention: The typical dose is 240 mg (two injections of 120 mg each, one right after the other) injected under the skin once when you first start the medication. Then, inject 120 mg under the skin once a month
- Episodic cluster headaches: The typical dose is 300 mg (three injections of 100 mg each, one right after the other) injected under the skin once at the start of your cluster period. Then, inject 300 mg under the skin once a month, until the end of your cluster period

- Serious allergic reactions: hives, swelling in the face and eyes, swollen throat, trouble breathing, wheezing, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, fainting
