Dalfampridine is a potassium channel blocker. In multiple sclerosis (MS), damaged nerves don’t work well because too much potassium leaves the nerve cells through proteins called potassium channels. It’s not exactly known how Dalfampridine works to improve walking in people with multiple sclerosis (MS). But it’s thought that it helps damaged nerves work again by blocking potassium channels on these nerve cells.

Dalfampridine is typically taken twice daily (approximately 12 hours apart). It can be taken with or without food.

Dalfampridine is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. You should not take this medication if you have a history of seizure, moderate or severe kidney impairment (CrCl≤50 mL/min), or a history of hypersensitivity to Dalfampridine or 4-aminopyridine.
