How does Ampyra work?
Ampyra is a potassium channel blocker. In multiple sclerosis (MS), damaged nerves don’t work well because too much potassium leaves the nerve cells through proteins called potassium channels. It’s not exactly known how Ampyra works to improve walking in people with multiple sclerosis (MS). But it’s thought that it helps damaged nerves work again by blocking potassium channels on these nerve cells.
How do I take Ampyra?
Ampyra is typically taken twice daily (approximately 12 hours apart). It can be taken with or without food.
Is it safe for me to take Ampyra?
Ampyra is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. You should not take this medication if you have a history of seizure, moderate or severe kidney impairment (CrCl≤50 mL/min), or a history of hypersensitivity to Ampyra or 4-aminopyridine.

- Severe allergic reactions: hives, rash, red skin, swelling of the lips or tongue, closing of the throat, difficulty breathing

- OCT2 Inhibitors – Concomitant use may cause an increased exposure and potential risk of seizures
