How does Cerdelga work?
Cerdelga is a glucosylceramide synthase inhibitor. It blocks your body from making GL-1. This lowers the amount of GL-1 in the body, which helps lower GL-1 buildup in your spleen, liver, and other organs.
How do I take Cerdelga?
In general, the typical dose is 84 mg by mouth once or twice daily, with or without food.
Dosing is based on your genetic makeup and how well your body can break down Cerdelga. Because of this, you’ll need to do genetic testing before you start this medication so your provider can prescribe the appropriate dose for you.
The dose will also depend on whether you have liver problems or whether you’re taking other medications that can interact with Cerdelga.
Is it safe for me to take Cerdelga?
Cerdelga is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. You should not use this medication in the following.
CYP2D6 EMs and IMs taking a strong or moderate CYP2D6 inhibitor with a strong or moderate CYP3A inhibitor.
CYP2D6 IMs and PMs taking a strong CYP3A inhibitor.
Cerdelga Common Side Effects
- Common side effects of Cerdelga:
- Fatigue
- Headache
- Nausea
- Diarrhea
- Back pain
- Pain in arm or leg
- Upper stomach pain
Cerdelga Serious Side Effects
Serious side effects are rare with Cerdelga. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following.
Abnormal heart rhythm: abnormally fast heart rate, racing or pounding heart, fainting, dizziness
Effects of other drugs, drug classes and over-the-counter products on Cerdelga
- The following medications may interact with Cerdelga:
- Eliglustat is a CYP2D6 and CYP3A substrate. Co-administration of
- Cerdelga with drugs that inhibit CYP2D6 and CYP3A may
- significantly increase the exposure to eliglustat and result in prolongation
- of the PR, QTc, and/or QRS cardiac interval, which could result in cardiac
- arrhythmias. Consider potential drug interactions prior to and during
- therapy.
- CYP2D6 IMs and PMs taking moderate CYP3A inhibitors: not
- recommended.
- CYP2D6 PMs taking weak CYP3A inhibitors: not recommended.
- CYP2D6 EMs and IMs taking strong or moderate CYP2D6 inhibitors and
- CYP2D6 EMs taking strong or moderate CYP3A inhibitors: reduce the
- dosage to 84 mg once daily.
- Eliglustat is an inhibitor of P-gp and CYP2D6. Co-administration with
- drugs that are substrates for P-gp or CYP2D6 may result in increased
- concentrations of the other drug.
