How does Catapres work?

Catapres is a type of medication called alpha agonist. It works in the brain to lower the activity of stress hormones, such as norepinephrine. By doing so, Catapres slows down your heart rate and relaxes your blood vessels. This allows for blood to easily flow throughout the body and brings down blood pressure.

How do I take Catapres?

Catapres is typically taken by mouth in dose ranges from 0.2 mg to 0.6 mg daily, but taken in divided doses throughout the day.

The following medications may interact with Catapres:

  • Catapres may potentiate the CNS-depressive effects of alcohol, barbiturates or other sedating drugs. You may need an increase in the clonidine dose
  • Due to a potential for additive effects such as bradycardia and AV block, caution is warranted in patients receiving clonidine concomitantly with agents known to affect sinus node function or AV nodal conduction, e.g., digitalis, calcium channel blockers and beta-blockers
