BUMEX is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. You should not take this medication if you have anuria, hepatic coma or in states of severe electrolyte depletion until the condition is improved or corrected.

BUMEX Serious Side Effects

Serious side effects are rare with BUMEX. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following.

  • Severe dehydration: feeling thirsty, lightheadedness, dry mouth, dark colored urine, urinating less
  • Low levels of potassium in the blood: muscle weakness and spasms, tiredness, heart racing, constipation, tingling or numbness, nausea, vomiting, muscle pain, confusion
  • Stevens-Johnson Syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis: skin pain, fever, body aches, red rash, peeling skin, blisters, sores

Effects of other drugs, drug classes and over-the-counter products on BUMEX

The following medications may interact with BUMEX:

  • Drugs With Nephrotoxic Potential – There has been no experience with the concurrent use of BUMEX with drugs known to have a nephrotoxic potential. Therefore, the simultaneous administration of these drugs should be avoided
  • Lithium – Lithium should generally not be given with diuretics because they reduce its renal clearance and add a high risk of lithium toxicity
  • Probenecid – Pretreatment with probenecid reduces both the natriuresis and hyperreninemia produced by BUMEX. Thus, probenecid should not be administered concurrently with BUMEX
  • Indomethacin – Indomethacin blunts increases in urine volume and sodium excretion so concurrent therapy with BUMEX is thus not recommended

Antihypertensives: BUMEX may potentiate the effect of various antihypertensive drugs, necessitating a reduction in the dosage of these drugs.
