What is generic atomoxetine?

Generic atomoxetine refers to the non-brand-name version of the medication. It contains the same active ingredient as the brand-name drug but is typically less expensive.

FDA approval of atomoxetine

Atomoxetine is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children, adolescents, and adults.

Active ingredient of atomoxetine

The active ingredient of atomoxetine is atomoxetine hydrochloride.

US brand name of atomoxetine and manufacturer

Atomoxetine is available in the US under the brand name Strattera. It is manufactured by Eli Lilly and Company.

UK brand name of atomoxetine and manufacturer

In the UK, atomoxetine is available under the brand name Strattera. The manufacturer may vary depending on the brand name.

Prescription requirement for atomoxetine

A prescription (Rx) is required for atomoxetine in both the US and the UK.

Availability of atomoxetine in the UK with NHS prescription

Atomoxetine is available in the UK with an NHS prescription.

Conditions treated by atomoxetine

Atomoxetine is used for the treatment of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children, adolescents, and adults. It helps to improve attention span, decrease impulsiveness, and reduce hyperactivity.

How does atomoxetine work?

Atomoxetine, a selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor, works by increasing the levels of norepinephrine in the brain. This mechanism of action helps regulate attention and impulse control in individuals with ADHD. By targeting brain chemicals, atomoxetine can improve cognitive function and reduce hyperactivity. In terms of its effects on brain chemicals, atomoxetine specifically inhibits the reuptake of noradrenaline (norepinephrine). This leads to increased levels of this neurotransmitter in the synaptic cleft, which enhances communication between nerve cells involved in attention and focus. As a result, individuals who take atomoxetine experience improved concentration and reduced distractibility.

Forms of atomoxetine available

Atomoxetine is available in the form of oral capsules.

Dosage of atomoxetine

The dosage of atomoxetine may vary depending on the individual’s age, weight, and response to treatment. It is important to follow the recommended dosage instructions the healthcare provider provides.

Directions for atomoxetine use

Atomoxetine capsules should be taken exactly as directed by the healthcare provider. The capsules are usually taken orally, with or without food. It is important to swallow the capsules whole and not open, crush, or chew them as this may affect their efficacy.  Atomoxetine can be administered either as a single daily dose or split into two evenly divided doses in the morning and afternoon. If you miss a dose of atomoxetine, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not double doses.

Warnings and precautions for atomoxetine

  • Atomoxetine may have certain risks and potential side effects. Discussing these with a healthcare provider before starting the medication is important
  • If you have a history of heart problems or cardiovascular disease, it is important to proceed with caution when taking atomoxetine. This medication can potentially increase heart rate and blood pressure, which may worsen your condition. Regular monitoring by a healthcare professional is essential
  • Individuals with liver disease should approach atomoxetine use carefully as the drug is primarily metabolized in the liver. Impaired liver function can affect how your body processes the medication, leading to potential complications and liver injury. Consult your doctor for personalized advice and close monitoring if you have any existing liver issues
  • High blood pressure requires special attention when considering atomoxetine treatment due to its potential impact on blood pressure levels. Your healthcare provider will closely monitor your blood pressure throughout therapy to ensure it remains within safe limits. It’s crucial to inform them about any pre-existing hypertension or related conditions before starting this medication regimen
  • Atomoxetine has been linked to an increased risk of suicidal thoughts or behavior, particularly in children and adolescents. It’s crucial to closely monitor any changes in mood, behavior, or emotions while taking this medication if you have a personal or family history of mental/mood disorders such as bipolar disorder, depression, psychosis, or suicidal thoughts
  • Some people may have an allergic reaction to atomoxetine, which can present as hives, rash, itching, swelling, or difficulty breathing. If you experience any of these symptoms, seek immediate medical attention
  • Atomoxetine is contraindicated for people with narrow-angle glaucoma (an eye disease that may cause vision loss) and pheochromocytoma

Drug interactions

  • Atomoxetine should not be taken with monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors (isocarboxazid, phenelzine) or within 14 days of discontinuing treatment with an MAO inhibitor, as it may lead to serious reactions, including hypertensive crisis
  • The use of CYP2D6 inhibitors, such as fluoxetine, paroxetine and quinidine, can significantly increase atomoxetine levels in the blood. Close monitoring is necessary to adjust the dosage and prevent potential adverse effects
  • Combining atomoxetine with serotonergic drugs like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) or serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) may increase the risk of serotonin syndrome. Caution must be exercised when using these medications together and appropriate monitoring should be done

Use of atomoxetine if pregnant or planning pregnancy

The use of atomoxetine during pregnancy and breastfeeding should be discussed with a healthcare provider. It is generally not recommended for use during pregnancy unless the potential benefits outweigh the risks.

Possible side effects of atomoxetine

Common side effects of atomoxetine may include nausea, dry mouth, abdominal pain, constipation, insomnia, loss of appetite, and increased heart rate. Serious side effects are possible but less common. If you experience symptoms like chest pain, difficulty breathing, or thoughts of self-harm, seek medical help immediately as these may be signs of a severe reaction. Promptly report any concerning symptoms to a healthcare provider. It is important to discuss any concerns or persistent side effects with your healthcare provider.

Similar drugs to atomoxetine

Other medications used for the treatment of ADHD include stimulant medications such as methylphenidate and amphetamine derivatives.
