How does APTIVUS work?
APTIVUS is a protease (an enzyme) inhibitor (PI). Normally, protease helps process viral proteins so the HIV virus can infect healthy cells. When protease is stopped by PI medications, the HIV virus cannot make copies of itself and infect your cells.
How do I take APTIVUS?
APTIVUS is typically taken as 500 mg with ritonavir 200 mg twice daily for adults.
- Children: The typical dose is based on the child’s weight, but won’t be more than the adult dose
Is it safe for me to take APTIVUS?
APTIVUS is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. You should not use this medication if you have moderate or severe (Child-Pugh Class B or C) hepatic impairment. Use drugs highly dependent on CYP 3A for clearance or are potent CYP 3A inducers.
