ZYPREXA is an atypical antipsychotic. It’s not completely known how ZYPREXA works, but it’s thought to work by balancing out the levels of chemicals (dopamine and serotonin) in your brain to help control your thoughts, mood, and behaviors.

How do I take ZYPREXA?

How do I take ZYPREXA?

ZYPREXA is dosed as follows:

  • Schizophrenia
  • Adults: The typical starting dose is 5 mg to 10 mg by mouth once daily. The typical maintenance dose is 10 mg to 15 mg once daily
  • Children (13 to 17 years old): The typical starting dose is 2.5 mg to 5 mg by mouth once daily. The typical maintenance dose is 10 mg once daily

Bipolar I disorder (mixed or manic episodes):

  • Adults: The typical starting dose is 10 mg or 15 mg once daily. The typical maintenance dose ranges from 5 mg to 20 mg once daily. Your dose might be different if your provider is also prescribing lithium (Lithobid) or valproic acid
  • Children (13 to 17 years old): The typical starting dose is 2.5 mg to 5 mg by mouth once daily. The typical maintenance dose ranges from 10 mg to 20 mg once daily

Depressive episodes of bipolar I disorder (with fluoxetine (Prozac)):

  • Adults: The typical starting dose is 5 mg by mouth once daily in the evening). The typical recommended dose ranges from 5 mg to 12.5 mg
  • Children (10 to 17 years old): The typical starting dose is 2.5 mg by mouth once daily

Depression:

  • Adults: The typical starting dose is 5 mg by mouth once daily. The typical maintenance dose ranges from 5 mg to 20 mg once daily

Is it safe for me to take ZYPREXA?

ZYPREXA is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. You should not use this medication if any of these apply to you:

  • None with ZYPREXA monotherapy
  • When using ZYPREXA and fluoxetine in combination, also refer to the Contraindications section of the package insert for Symbyax
  • When using ZYPREXA in combination with lithium or valproate, refer to the Contraindications section of the package inserts for those products

ZYPREXA Serious Side Effects

Serious side effects are rare with ZYPREXA. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following.

  • Seizures
  • Suicidal thoughts or actions
  • Neuroleptic malignant syndrome: fever, sweating, stiff muscles, confusion, not aware of your surroundings, fast or irregular heartbeat
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Dangerously high blood sugar: frequently thirsty, needing to urinate often, tiredness, nausea, vomiting, difficulty breathing, having fruity breath, having dry mouth
  • Serious infections: fever, headache, chills, body aches, cough, weakness
  • Serious allergic and skin reactions: hives, blisters, skin reddening or peeling, swelling of the lips or tongue, difficulty breathing

Effects of other drugs, drug classes and over-the-counter products on ZYPREXA

The following medications may interact with ZYPREXA:

  • Diazepam: May potentiate orthostatic hypotension
  • Alcohol: May potentiate orthostatic hypotension
  • Carbamazepine: Increased clearance of olanzapine
  • Fluvoxamine: May increase olanzapine levels
  • ZYPREXA and Fluoxetine in Combination: Also refer to the Drug
  • Interactions section of the package insert for Symbyax.
  • CNS Acting Drugs: Caution should be used when taken in combination with other centrally acting drugs and alcohol
  • Antihypertensive Agents: Enhanced antihypertensive effect
  • Levodopa and Dopamine Agonists: May antagonize
  • levodopa/dopamine agonists
  • Lorazepam (IM): Increased somnolence with IM olanzapine
  • Other Concomitant Drug Therapy: When using olanzapine in combination with lithium or valproate, refer to the Drug
  • Interactions sections of the package insert for those products

Is ZYPREXA safe in pregnancy?

Is ZYPREXA safe in pregnancy?

Neonates exposed to antipsychotic drugs, including ZYPREXA, during the third trimester are at risk for
extrapyramidal and/or withdrawal symptoms following delivery. ZYPREXA should be used during
pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. There is a pregnancy exposure registry that monitors pregnancy outcomes in women exposed to atypical
antipsychotics, including ZYPREXA, during pregnancy. Healthcare providers are encouraged to register patients by
contacting the National Pregnancy Registry for Atypical Antipsychotics at 1-866-961-2388 or visit women’s health
