ZARONTIN is the brand name for ethosuxamide and is available as an oral capsule and solution.
What dosages is ZARONTIN available in?
ZARONTIN is available as a 250 mg oral capsule and a 250 mg/5 ml oral solution.
What is ZARONTIN used for?
ZARONTIN is an antiepileptic that is used to treat absence (petit mal) seizures.
How does ZARONTIN work?
ZARONTIN is an antiepileptic (anti-seizure) medication. It calms certain nerves and brain activity that are linked to seizures in people who have absence (petit mal) epilepsy (a condition with recurring seizures).
How do I take ZARONTIN?
ZARONTIN is dosed as follows:
- Children 3 to 6 years of age: Start with 250 mg by mouth per day
- Adults and children 6 years of age and older: Start with 500 mg by mouth per day
- If necessary, your or your child’s provider will adjust the dose after a few days until they find the right dose for you
- The typical long-term (maintenance) dose for children is about 20 mg/kg of bodyweight per day
Is it safe for me to take ZARONTIN?
ZARONTIN is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. You should not use this medication if you have a history of hypersensitivity to succinimides.
ZARONTIN Common Side Effects
Common side effects of ZARONTIN:
- Poor appetite
- Upset stomach
- Nausea or vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Stomach cramps or pain
- Weight loss
- Drowsiness
- Tiredness
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Hiccups
- Difficulty with walking, movement, or coordination
- Difficulty concentrating
ZARONTIN Serious Side Effects
Serious side effects are rare with ZARONTIN. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following.
- Low blood cell counts: getting sick more often, feeling weak or short of breath more than usual
- Allergic reaction: severe rash, hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, mouth, or throat
- Thoughts of hurting yourself or of suicide
Effects of other drugs, drug classes and over-the-counter products on ZARONTIN
The following medications may interact with ZARONTIN:
- ZARONTIN may interact with concurrently administered antiepileptic drugs so periodic serum level determinations of these drugs may be necessary (eg, ethosuximide may elevate phenytoin serum levels and valproic acid has been reported to both increase and decrease ethosuximide levels)

ZARONTIN may be harmful to your baby, but there isn’t enough evidence out there to be sure of the risks. ZARONTIN should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus.There is a North American Antiepileptic Drug (NAAED) Pregnancy Registry that monitors the safety of anti-seizure medications during pregnancy. If you’re currently pregnant and taking ZARONTIN, it’s encouraged that you enroll in the registry by visiting the website or calling 1-888-233-2334.
