Zarontin is an antiepileptic that is used to treat absence (petit mal) seizures.

Zarontin is an antiepileptic (anti-seizure) medication. It calms certain nerves and brain activity that are linked to seizures in people who have absence (petit mal) epilepsy (a condition with recurring seizures).

Zarontin is dosed as follows:

• Children 3 to 6 years of age: Start with 250 mg by mouth per day
• Adults and children 6 years of age and older: Start with 500 mg by mouth per day
• If necessary, your or your child’s provider will adjust the dose after a few days until they find the right dose for you
• The typical long-term (maintenance) dose for children is about 20 mg/kg of bodyweight per day

Zarontin is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects.
