Zanamivir is an antiviral and is used to treat the following:

• Flu treatment type A and B (for patients 7 and older)
• Flu prevention type A and B (for patients 5 and older)

Zanamivir is an antiviral medication that stops an enzyme in the influenza type A and B (flu) virus called neuraminidase. Without this enzyme the virus can’t spread in your lungs.

Zanamivir is typically dosed as follows:

• Flu treatment: The typical dose for adults and children age 7 or older is 10 mg two times a day for 5 days
• Flu prevention: The typical dose for adults and children age 5 or older is 10 mg once a day for 10 or 28 days depending on the setting

The following medications may interact with Zanamivir:

• Do not administer live attenuated influenza vaccine, intranasal until 48 hours following cessation of Zanamivir
• Do not administer Zanamivir until 2 weeks following administration of the live attenuated influenza vaccine, unless medically indicated
