What is Vesicare used for?
Vesicare is an anticholinergic and antimuscarinic that is used to treat:
- Overactive bladder (tablets only)
- Incontinence in children due to a neurologic condition, such as spina bifida (liquid only)
How does Vesicare work?
Vesicare is an anticholinergic and antimuscarinic medication that relaxes the muscles in your bladder. Relaxed bladder muscles have fewer spasms, and this reduces your need to urinate.
How do I take Vesicare?
Vesicare is dosed as follows:
- Dosing for adults: The typical dose is 5 mg to 10 mg by mouth once a day
- Dosing for children over 2 years old: The dose is based on your child’s weight. They will take between 2 mL and 10 mL by mouth once a day
- Vesicare is not FDA-approved for use in children under 2 years old
Is it safe for me to take Vesicare?
Vesicare is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. You should not use this medication if you have any of the following:
- Urinary retention
- Gastric retention
Uncontrolled narrow-angle glaucoma - Hypersensitivity to this product or any of its components
Vesicare Common Side Effects
Common side effects of Vesicare:
- Dry Mouth
- Constipation
- Urinary tract infections
- Blurry vision
- Nausea
- Upset stomach/indigestion
Vesicare Serious Side Effects
Serious side effects are rare with Vesicare. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following.
- Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
Effects of other drugs, drug classes and over-the-counter products on Vesicare
The following medications may interact with Vesicare:
- CYP3A4 Inhibitors: Do not exceed the 5 mg dose of Vesicare with concomitant use of strong CYP3A4 inhibitors

Is Vesicare safe in pregnancy?
There are no adequate and well-controlled studies of the teratogenic potential of Vesicare in pregnant women. Vesicare should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus.
