Varivax is a vaccine that protects you from chickenpox (varicella). The vaccine helps your body’s immune system remember the virus so it can attack the virus if it ever infects your body again. Varivax is a live attenuated vaccine (made from a very weak virus).

Varivax is dosed as follows:

• Dose for children between 12 months and 12 years old: Varivax is given in two doses. The first dose is usually given by injection between the ages of 12 and 15 months. The second dose is usually given between the ages of 4 and 6 years old. If Varivax is not given at these age ranges, there must be at least 3 months between the first and second dose.
• Dose for adults and children over 13 years old: Varivax is given in two doses. You can get the first dose at any time you choose. The second dose should be given by injection at least 4 weeks after the first dose.

Varivax is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. You should not use this medication in the following:

• History of severe allergic reaction to any component of the vaccine (including neomycin and gelatin) or to a previous dose of varicella vaccine
• Immunosuppression
• Moderate or severe febrile illness
• Active untreated tuberculosis
• Pregnancy

Common side effects of Varivax:

• Pain, swelling, redness, bruising, and itching where Varivax (Varicella vaccine) was injected
• Fever
• Rash that looks like chickenpox
• Rash that looks like chickenpox where Varivax

Serious side effects are rare with Varivax. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following.

• Allergic reactions

The following medications may interact with Varivax:

• Reye syndrome has been reported in children and adolescents following the use of salicylates during wild-type varicella infection
• Administration of immune globulins and other blood products concurrently with Varivax vaccine may interfere with the expected immune response
• Varivax vaccination may result in a temporary depression of purified protein derivative (PPD) tuberculin skin sensitivity
