Vafseo is a hypoxia-inducible factor prolyl hydroxylase (HIF PH) inhibitor indicated for the treatment of anemia due to chronic kidney disease (CKD) in adults who have been receiving dialysis for at least three months.
How does Vafseo work?
Vafseo works by increasing the production of erythropoietin, which is a hormone responsible for making red blood cells in the body.
How do I take Vafseo?
The recommended starting dose of Vafseo is 300 mg orally once daily, with or without food. The dose can be increased in increments of 150 mg to achieve or maintain hemoglobin levels of 10 g/dL to 11 g/dL. Doses may range from 150 mg to a maximum of 600 mg.

Vafseo is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA approved indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. Vafseo Serious Side Effects
Serious side effects are rare with Vafseo. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following: Increased risk of blood clots that may be fatal, including myocardial infarction (MI), stroke, VTE, and vascular access thrombosis. Liver damage, Seizures, Stomach ulcers and bleeding Increased risk of cancer.
Effects of other drugs, drug classes and over-the-counter products on Vafseo
The following medications may interact with Vafseo: Iron supplements and iron-containing phosphate binders: Give Vafseo at least 1 hour before products containing iron. Non-iron-containing phosphate binders: Give Vafseo at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after non-iron-containing phosphate binders. BCRP substrates: Monitor for signs of substrate adverse reactions and consider substrate dose reduction. Statins: Monitor for statin-related adverse reactions.
