What is TRILEPTAL?
TRILEPTAL is the brand name for oxcarbazepine and is available as an oral tablet and suspension.
What dosages is TRILEPTAL available in?
TRILEPTAL is available as a 150 mg, 300 mg, and 600 mg oral tablet and a 300 mg/5 ml oral suspension.
What is TRILEPTAL used for?
TRILEPTAL is an antiepitleptic that is used to treat partial-onset seizures.
How does TRILEPTAL work?
TRILEPTAL is an antiepileptic known as a sodium channel blocker. The exact way TRILEPTAL works to treat seizures isn’t known. But it’s thought to lower seizure activities by blocking certain nerve cell activities in your brain.
How do I take TRILEPTAL?
TRILEPTAL is dosed as follows:
People ages 17 years and older: The typical starting dose is 300 mg by mouth twice daily. If needed, your provider will raise your dose slowly over 2 to 4 weeks. The maximum daily dose ranges from 1,200 mg to 2,400 mg, depending on whether you’re taking other antiseizure medications. People ages 2 to less than 17 years: Your child’s provider will determine your child’s dose based on their body weight. The typical starting dose is 8 mg/kg to 10 mg/kg of body weight (up to a maximum of 600 mg), split into 2 doses and taken by mouth twice daily. If needed, your child’s provider will raise their dose slowly over 2 to 4 weeks. The typical maintenance dose ranges from 900 mg to 2,100 mg daily, depending on their age, body weight, and whether they’re taking other antiseizure medications.
Is it safe for me to take TRILEPTAL?
TRILEPTAL is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you.
TRILEPTAL Common Side Effects
Common side effects of TRILEPTAL:
- Dizziness
- Nausea
- Headache
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Runny nose, sore throat, and other symptoms of an upper respiratory tract infection
TRILEPTAL Serious Side Effects
Serious side effects are rare with TRILEPTAL. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following.
- Serious allergic and skin reactions: hives, rash, blisters, fever, swelling of the lips or tongue, difficulty breathing, skin reddening
- Low blood sodium levels: nausea, fatigue, headache, confusion, disoriented, hallucinations (seeing things that aren’t real), seizures, unconsciousness
- Suicidal thoughts or behaviors
- Seizures
Effects of other drugs, drug classes and over-the-counter products on TRILEPTAL
The following medications may interact with TRILEPTAL:
- Phenytoin: Increased phenytoin levels. Reduced dose of phenytoin may be required
- Carbamazepine, Phenytoin, Phenobarbital: Decreased plasma levels of MHD (the active metabolite). Dose adjustments may be necessary
- Oral Contraceptive: TRILEPTAL may decrease the effectiveness of hormonal contraceptives
