Toprol XL is a selective beta blocker. It slows down the heart which allows it to put less pressure on the body’s blood vessels. By slowing down the heart, it also allows the heart to use less oxygen which improves chest pain.

Toprol XL is typically started at 25 mg to 100 mg by mouth once daily. Your provider might adjust your dose weekly based on how your blood pressure is doing. Children will be dosed based on their body weight.

Toprol XL is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. You should not use this medication if you have severe bradycardia, heart block greater than first degree, cardiogenic shock, decompensated cardiac failure, sick sinus syndrome (unless a permanent pacemaker
is in place), and in patients who are hypersensitive to any component of this product.

Serious side effects are rare with Toprol XL. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following.

• Serious drop in heart rate or other irregular heart rhythm: feeling faint or weak, dizziness, trouble breathing, chest pain, sweating
• Heart failure: trouble breathing, fast weight gain, feeling very tired, chest pain, swelling in the legs, ankles, or feet
• Bronchospasm: tightness in the chest, trouble catching your breath, difficulty breathing, wheezing, cough, dizziness, extreme tiredness

The following medications may interact with Toprol XL:

• Catecholamine-depleting drugs may have an additive effect when given with beta-blocking agents
• Patients may be unresponsive to the usual doses of epinephrine used to treat allergic reaction
• CYP2D6 Inhibitors are likely to increase metoprolol concentration
• Concomitant use of glycosides, clonidine, and diltiazem and verapamil with beta-blockers can increase the risk of bradycardia
• Beta-blockers including metoprolol, may exacerbate the rebound hypertension that can follow the withdrawal of clonidine
