Prescription requirement for telmisartan

Telmisartan is a prescription medication in both the US and the UK. It is not available over the counter and requires a prescription from a healthcare provider.

FDA approval of telmisartan

Telmisartan has received FDA approval for the treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure). It is indicated for the management of hypertension to lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of cardiovascular events.

Is telmisartan available in the UK on NHS?

Telmisartan is available on the NHS in the UK. It can be prescribed by healthcare providers for the treatment of high blood pressure.

Mechanism of action

Telmisartan belongs to a class of medications called angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs). It acts on the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system and works by blocking the action of angiotensin II, a substance in the body that causes blood vessels to constrict. By blocking the effects of angiotensin II, telmisartan helps relax blood vessels, thereby lowering blood pressure.

Uses of telmisartan

Telmisartan is an angiotensin II receptor antagonist, primarily used for the management of high blood pressure. Lowering blood pressure helps reduce blood pressure in individuals with hypertension. By maintaining blood pressure within a healthy range in hypertensive patients, it can help reduce the risk of heart disease and cardiovascular events, such as damage to blood vessels of the brain, heart, and kidneys, congestive heart failure, heart attack and stroke.

Dosage of telmisartan

The dosage of telmisartan will vary depending on the individual patient’s condition, response to treatment, and other factors. It is important to follow the dosage instructions provided by your healthcare provider.

Precautions and warnings for telmisartan

  • Telmisartan should not be used in individuals who have a known allergy to the medication or any of its components
  • It is important to inform your healthcare provider about any existing medical conditions, especially kidney disease, liver disease, or heart-related conditions
  • Telmisartan may interact with certain medications, including other blood pressure medications, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and certain diuretics. It is important to inform your healthcare provider about all the medications you are taking to avoid potential interactions
  • Telmisartan may cause a drop in blood pressure, especially during the initial stages of treatment. It is important to monitor blood pressure regularly and report any significant changes to your healthcare provider
  • Telmisartan may have an impact on kidney function, and periodic monitoring of kidney function may be recommended
  • It is not known if telmisartan passes into breast milk. Speak to your doctor before breast-feeding

Side effects of telmisartan

In clinical trials common side effects of telmisartan may include headache, dizziness, fatigue, and gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea or diarrhea. It may also cause an increase in potassium levels or changes in renal function. It is important to discuss any persistent or severe adverse events such as ankle or feet swelling, or rapid weight gain with your healthcare provider. Get medical help right away if you have any serious side effects such as an allergic reaction. Symptoms include hives, trouble breathing, shortness of breath, sore throat, chest pain, swelling of the face, tongue or throat, skin rash, and severe skin reactions. Promptly report any adverse effects to a healthcare professional for medical advice.

Interactions with other drugs

Telmisartan may interact with other medications, including aliskiren, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACE inhibitors) such as captopril, enalapril, lisinopril, perindopril, and ramipril, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen and naproxen, digoxin, diuretics, lithium, and potassium supplements.  It is important to inform your healthcare provider about all the prescription drugs, over the counter nonprescription medications, salt substitutes, supplements, and vitamins you are taking to avoid potential adverse effects and drug interactions.
