RETISERT® (fluocinolone acetonide intravitreal implant) 0.59 mg is used to treat an inflammation in the back of the eye that is not caused by an infection, called chronic non-infectious uveitis.

RETISERT is designed to release fluocinolone acetonide at a nominal initial rate of 0.6 mcg/day, decreasing over the first month to a steady state between 0.3-0.4 mcg/day over approximately 30 months. Following depletion of fluocinolone acetonide as evidenced by recurrence of uveitis, RETISERT may be replaced.

Official answer. Retisert and Yutiq are both indicated for non-infectious uveitis at different dosages. Iluvien is indicated for diabetic macular edema (DME). There are several differences between Iluvien, Retisert and Yutiq, including approved uses, doses, and insertion.

OZURDEX® should not be used if you are allergic to any of its ingredients. Warnings and Precautions Injections into the vitreous in the eye, including those with OZURDEX®, are associated with serious eye infection (endophthalmitis), eye inflammation, increased eye pressure, and retinal detachments.

Ozurdex (dexamethasone) Intravitreal Implant is a steroid injected into the eye to treat swelling that may occur when there is a blockage of certain blood vessels in your eyes. Ozurdex is also used to treat non-infectious uveitis affecting the posterior (rear) segment of the eye.

Fluocinolone acetonide intravitreal implant is used in diabetic patients who have diabetic macular edema (DME). Macular edema is swelling in the back of the eye and may cause vision loss. This medicine is used in patients who already have received steroid medicines and did not have an increase in intraocular pressure.

A ILUVIEN® (fluocinolone acetonide intravitreal implant) 0.19 mg lasts for 36 months.

The active ingredient in OZURDEX® is dexamethasone. Dexamethasone belongs to a group of medicines called corticosteroids.

Ozurdex is indicated for the treatment of adult patients with macular oedema following either branch retinal-vein occlusion (BRVO) or central retinal-vein occlusion (CRVO). Ozurdex is indicated for the treatment of adult patients with inflammation of the posterior segment of the eye presenting as noninfectious uveitis.

The ILUVIEN microimplant that is inserted into the eye is the only FDA-approved prescription medication for DME that provides continuous treatment for up to 3 years.

What is Yutiq? Fluocinolone ophthalmic (for the eye) implant is a steroid medicine that is used to treat diabetic macular edema, a build-up of fluid in the retina that is caused by leaking blood vessels. Yutiq is also used to treat posterior uveitis, inflammation that affects the back of the eye.

The non-bioerodible implant does not dissolve and does not need to be removed. YUTIQ is designed to deliver a steady release of medicine up to 36 months.

RETISERT is surgically implanted into the posterior segment of the affected eye through a pars plana incision. The implant contains one tablet of 0.59 mg of fluocinolone acetonide.

‘ NICE Appraisal Committee noted that ‘dexamethasone intravitreal implant is licensed for use every 6 months in line with the MEAD trials, however noted from physician experts that it is often given more frequently than this in practice (every 4 months).

The biodegradable dexamethasone implant is usually invisible to the patient and only 2mm in length.

Concentration of the drug becomes undetectable after 7–8 months. [2] Known complications of the implant include endophthalmitis, glaucoma, and cataract. Lenticular injury during Ozurdex implantation is rare but known.

Phakic IOLs are intended to be permanent, but if it is medically necessary to remove them, a surgeon can take them out. There are other qualifications to undergo phakic IOL surgery. You must be between 21 and 40 years old.

Ozurdex® has been approved by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) to treat patients with macular oedema (swelling of the back part of the eye) due to uveitis, branch retinal vein occlusion, central retinal vein occlusion or diabetic macular oedema.

Production and development of the prosthesis was discontinued in 2020, but taken over by the company Cortigent in 2023.

All in all, the potential for at least functional vision with the retinal electronic prosthesis is good in the near future as clinical trials progress. Much will depend on long-term stability of the chip at the delicate biological interface with the retina.

You may experience infection, bleeding, or severe inflammation (pain, redness, and decreased vision). These are rare complications that can sometimes lead to permanent loss of vision or loss of the eye. Long-term data are not available.

In the 1990s, scientists began taking baby steps towards an artificial eye for blind patients by implanting electrodes in the brain part – the visual cortex – that deals with vision. These miniscule metal contact points can interact with brain cells to convey visual information.

Epiretinal implants directly stimulate the retinal ganglion cells, thereby bypassing all other retinal layers. Therefore, in principle, epiretinal implants could provide visual perception to individuals even if all other retinal layers have been damaged.

Prosthetic eyes (also called “glass eyes” or “artificial eyes”) replace the physical structure and appearance of an eye that must be removed due to trauma, pain, disfigurement or disease. Bionic eye implants, on the other hand, work inside the existing eye structures or in the brain.

Rarely, an operation called a vitrectomy may be needed to treat uveitis. It’s usually only recommended if you have repeated or severe uveitis, or if the condition is caused by certain infections. A vitrectomy involves gently sucking out the jelly-like substance that fills the inside of the eye (vitreous humour).

Until recently, permanent eye-color change has not been possible, but now a new procedure does more than just change the eyes’ color, it frequently damages them just as permanently. During iris implant surgery, an artificial iris made of silicone is folded and inserted into a slit that has been cut into the cornea.
