How does Rectiv work?
Rectiv is a nitrate. When it’s applied inside the anus, this medication mainly works to relax the muscles around the area. This lowers the pressure inside the anus which helps with pain and allows the fissures (small skin tears) to heal faster.
How do I take Rectiv?
Rectiv is typically dosed as follows:
- Apply 1 inch of ointment (375 mg of ointment equivalent to 1.5 mg of
- Nitroglycerin) intra-anally every 12 hours for up to 3 weeks.
Is it safe for me to take Rectiv?
Rectiv is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. You should not use this medication in the following:
- Taking a PDE5 inhibitor
- Seriously low red blood cells (anemia)
- High pressure in the brain
- Allergy to nitrates or nitrites
