How does Onexton work?
Onexton is a combination of two medications that are applied to the skin to treat acne. Clindamycin and benzoyl peroxide are both antibiotics that work together to stop the growth of acne-causing bacteria. Benzoyl peroxide also helps remove old skin by causing skin to shed and peel, which is good for clearing up acne.
How do I take Onexton?
Onexton is dosed as follows:
- Clindamycin/benzoyl peroxide comes in many strengths and brand names that can have different instructions. Talk to your provider to see how many times per day to apply the medication
- In general, the typical dose is a pea-sized amount applied to the face once daily. There is a certain strength of clindamycin/benzoyl peroxide that should be applied twice daily

Onexton is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. You should not use this medication in the following:
- Patients who have demonstrated hypersensitivity (e.g., anaphylaxis) to clindamycin, benzoyl peroxide, any components of the formulation, or lincomycin.
Patients with a history of regional enteritis, ulcerative colitis, or antibiotic-associated
colitis
Onexton Common Side Effects
Common side effects of Onexton:
- Pain at site of application
- Skin shedding
- Skin irritation
Onexton Serious Side Effects
Serious side effects are rare with Onexton. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following.
- Inflammation of your large intestine: diarrhea that does not go away, especially if it is bloody, severe stomach cramps
Effects of other drugs, drug classes and over-the-counter products on Onexton
The following medications may interact with Onexton:
- Erythromycin: Avoid using Onexton Gel in combination with topical or oral erythromycin-containing
- products due to its clindamycin component. In vitro studies have shown antagonism between erythromycin and clindamycin. The clinical significance of this in vitro
- antagonism is not known
- Neuromuscular Blocking Agents: Clindamycin has been shown to have neuromuscular blocking properties that may enhance the action of other neuromuscular blocking agents. Onexton Gel should be used with caution in patients receiving such agents
