What dosages is Noctiva available in?
Noctiva is a preservative-free nasal spray delivering 0.83 mcg of desmopressin acetate (equivalent to 0.75 mcg desmopressin) or 1.66 mcg of desmopressin acetate (equivalent to 1.5 mcg desmopressin) in each spray (0.1 mL).
What is Noctiva used for?
Noctiva is used to treat central diabetes insipidus (extreme thirst and frequent urination due to low vasopressin).
How does Noctiva work?
Noctiva is a synthetic vasopressin analog, which means it’s a man-made form of a natural hormone in your body called vasopressin. It works in your kidneys to balance fluids in your body and stop you from making too much urine.
How do I take Noctiva?
Noctiva is typically dosed as follows:
- Adults: The typical starting dose is 10 mcg to 40 mcg into one nostril once a day, either given all at once or split into two or three doses throughout the day.
- Children age 4 years and older: The typical starting dose is 10 mcg into one nostril daily. If your child’s provider raises their dose, they might give it all at once or split the total daily dose into two doses (one dose in the morning and the other at nighttime).
Is it safe for me to take Noctiva?
Noctiva is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. You should not use this medication in the following:
- Hyponatremia or a history of hyponatremia (low sodium)
- Polydipsia
- Primary nocturnal enuresis
- Concomitant use with loop diuretics or systemic or inhaled glucocorticoids
- Poor kidney function
- Syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH)
- During illnesses that can cause fluid or electrolyte imbalance
- Congestive heart failure
- Uncontrolled hypertension

Common side effects of Noctiva:
- Headache
- Sore throat
- Cough
- Common cold
- Nausea
- Flushing
- Mild stomach cramps
Noctiva Serious Side Effects
Serious side effects are rare with Noctiva. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following:
- Low sodium levels: seizures, coma, or death
- Allergic reactions: trouble breathing, hives, swelling in your face, lips, tongue, or throat
Effects of other drugs, drug classes and over-the-counter products on Noctiva
The following medications may interact with Noctiva:
- Drugs that may cause water retention and increase the risk for hyponatremia (e.g., tricyclic antidepressants, selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors, chlorpromazine, opiate analgesics, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories, lamotrigine
- And carbamazepine).
