What is NEXIUM SUSPENSION?
NEXIUM SUSPENSION is the brand name for esomeprazole magnesium and is available as a delayed-release oral suspension.
What dosages is NEXIUM SUSPENSION available in?
NEXIUM SUSPENSION is available as a 2.5 mg, 5 mg,
10 mg, 20 mg, and 40 mg delayed-release oral suspension.
What is NEXIUM SUSPENSION used for?
NEXIUM is a proton pump inhibitor that is used to treat:
- Heartburn — OTC only
- Lower the risk of stomach ulcer due to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID)
- Lower the risk of duodenal ulcer caused by Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection
- Other medical conditions that cause too much stomach acid (e.g., Zollinger-Ellison syndrome)
How does NEXIUM SUSPENSION work?
NEXIUM is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). It lowers the amount of acid in your stomach by blocking the final step of stomach acid production. This helps relieve heartburn and other stomach problems.
How do I take NEXIUM SUSPENSION?
NEXIUM is typically taken as 20 mg to 40 mg by mouth once daily. Dosing for children will depend on the child’s weight, age, and the reason they’re taking the medication.
Is it safe for me to take NEXIUM SUSPENSION?
NEXIUM is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. You should not use this medication if you have a known hypersensitivity to proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) (angioedema and anaphylaxis have occurred.

Common side effects of NEXIUM:
- Headache
- Belly pain
- Diarrhea
- Nausea
- Passing gas
- Constipation
- Dry mouth
NEXIUM SUSPENSION Serious Side Effects
Serious side effects are rare with NEXIUM. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following.
- Severe stomach pain or diarrhea
- Kidney problems: urinating more or less than usual, fever, poor appetite
- Lupus symptoms: joint pain, skin rash on arms or cheeks that gets worse in the sunlight
- Serious skin reactions: blistering, peeling, or bleeding skin, fever, chills
Effects of other drugs, drug classes and over-the-counter products on NEXIUM SUSPENSION
The following medications may interact with NEXIUM:
- May affect plasma levels of antiretroviral drugs; use with atazanavir and nelfinavir is not recommended; if saquinavir is used with NEXIUM, monitor for toxicity and consider saquinavir dose reduction
- May interfere with drugs for which gastric pH affects bioavailability (e.g., ketoconazole, iron salts, erlotinib, digoxin and mycophenolate mofetil). Patients treated with NEXIUM and digoxin may need to be monitored for digoxin toxicity
- Combined inhibitor of CzP 2C19 and 3A4 may raise esomeprazole levels
- Clopidogrel: NEXIUM decreases exposure to the active metabolite of clopidogrel
- May increase systemic exposure of cilostazol and an active metabolite. Consider dose reduction
- Tacrolimus: NEXIUM may increase serum levels of tacrolimus
- Methotrexate: NEXIUM may increase serum levels of methotrexate
