Mannitol is a prescription inhalation powder medication used as an add-on maintenance therapy to improve lung function in adults (18 years and older) with cystic fibrosis (CF).

Mannitol contains Mannitol, a sugar alcohol that acts as an osmotic agent. When inhaled as a dry powder, it is thought to draw water into the airways, which helps to thin the thick, sticky mucus characteristic of CF, making it easier to cough out.

For the treatment of cystic fibrosis:

• 400 mg of Mannitol (10 capsules)
• Twice a day by oral inhalation, in the morning and evening, with the later
• Dose taken 2-3 hours before bedtime.
