What is Lovaza used for?
Lovaza is an antilipemic that is used as an add-on to diet for the treatment of high triglycerides (TG) in adults with TG levels greater than 500 mg/dL.
How does Lovaza work?
Lovaza is made up of two different omega-3 fatty acids, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). How they work to lower triglycerides isn’t well-understood. But it’s thought they block certain processes that make and transport TG throughout the body.
How do I take Lovaza?
Lovaza is typically dosed at 4 grams by mouth every day with food. All 4 grams can be taken once per day, or the dose can be split up as 2 grams by mouth twice daily.
Is it safe for me to take Lovaza?
Lovaza is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. You should not use this medication if you have a known hypersensitivity (e.g.,
anaphylactic reaction) to Lovaza or any of its components.

Serious side effects are rare with Lovaza. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following.
- Allergic reaction: itchy, red rash (hives), shortness of breath, chest tightness, swelling of lips, tongue, face, or eyes
Effects of other drugs, drug classes and over-the-counter products on Lovaza
The following medications may interact with Lovaza:
- Omega-3-acids may prolong bleeding time. Patients taking Lovaza and an anticoagulant or other drug affecting coagulation (e.g., anti-platelet agents) should be monitored periodically
