How does LIPOFEN work?
LIPOFEN is a fibrate. It works by breaking down lipids (fatty substances) in your blood, such as “bad” cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein or LDL) and triglycerides. This lowers the amount of lipids that can clog your arteries and helps blood flow more smoothly to different parts of your body. It also helps make more “good” cholesterol (high-density lipoprotein or HDL) in your body. Having more HDL can lower your risk for heart problems or stroke.
How do I take LIPOFEN?
LIPOFEN is typically taken by mouth once daily.
Is it safe for me to take LIPOFEN?
LIPOFEN is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. You should not take this medication if you have severe kidney impairment, are on dialysis, have active liver disease, gallbladder disease or are a nursing mother.

Common side effects of LIPOFEN include:
- Liver damage

LIPOFEN Serious Side Effects
Serious side effects are rare with LIPOFEN. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following.
- Serious allergic and skin reactions: sore throat, fever, fatigue, rash, hives, painful blisters, skin reddening, skin peeling, swollen lymph nodes
- Liver damage: swelling of your stomach, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, yellowing of your skin or the whites of your eyes, confusion
- Severe muscle pain: fever, tired, dark-colored (brown or red color) urine, muscle pain, cramps, or weakness
- Blood clots in lungs or legs: chest pain, difficulty breathing, swelling or warmth in your legs, leg muscles that are tender to the touch
Effects of other drugs, drug classes and over-the-counter products on LIPOFEN
The following medications may interact with LIPOFEN:
- Warfarin – May result in a prolonged PT/INR time
- Immunosuppressants such as cyclosporine and tacrolimus – Can cause nephrotoxicity
- Bile acid binding resins – take LIPOFEN at least 1 hour before or 4 to 6 hours after a bile acid binding resin to avoid impeding its absorption
- Colchcine – Cases of myopathy, including rhabdomyolysis, have been reported with fenofibrates are taken with colchicine
