How does letrozole work?

Letrozole belongs to a class of medications called aromatase inhibitors. It works by reducing the production of estrogen in the body. Estrogen can promote the growth of hormone receptor-positive breast cancer cells. By lowering estrogen levels, letrozole helps to inhibit the growth of cancer cells.

Forms of letrozole available

Letrozole is available in oral tablet form.

Dosage of letrozole

The dosage of letrozole may vary depending on the specific condition being treated and individual patient factors. It is important to follow the recommended dosage instructions provided by the healthcare provider.

If you forget to take your medication, take it as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it’s almost time for your next dose.

Letrozole should be taken as directed by the healthcare provider. The specific instructions may include the timing of administration, dosage adjustments, and any necessary precautions.

Letrozole is contraindicated for use during pregnancy. It may cause harm to the developing fetus. Use birth control or an effective form of contraception to prevent pregnancy during treatment. If you are planning to become pregnant or suspect that you are pregnant, it is important to inform your healthcare provider. They can provide guidance and recommend alternative treatment options.

Warnings and precautions for letrozole

  • Letrozole may cause bone loss or osteoporosis, especially in postmenopausal women. Regular bone density monitoring may be recommended during treatment
  • Your doctor will also monitor your blood pressure and cholesterol levels as these can also be affected when taking letrozole
  • It is important to inform the healthcare provider about any existing medical conditions, allergies, and any other medications or supplements you are currently taking, to avoid potential drug interactions

Interactions with other drugs

Letrozole tablets may interact with certain medications, including hormonal therapies, tamoxifen, and estrogen-containing products. It is important to inform the healthcare provider about all medications and supplements you are taking to minimize the risk of interactions.

Possible side effects of letrozole

Common side effects of letrozole may include constipation, diarrhea, hot flashes, joint pain, bone pain, and muscle pain, tiredness, headache, blurred vision and increased sweating. Rarely, it’s possible to have a severe allergic reaction to letrozole. If these serious side effects persist or worsen, it is important to contact a healthcare provider.

Similar drugs to letrozole

Other aromatase inhibitors, such as anastrozole and exemestane, may be used as alternatives to letrozole for the treatment of hormone receptor-positive breast cancer in postmenopausal women.
