Imetelstat is an oligonucleotide telomerase inhibitor indicated for the treatment of adult patients with low- to intermediate-1 risk myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) with transfusion-dependent anemia requiring 4 or more red blood cell units over 8 weeks who have not responded to or have lost response to or are ineligible for erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESA).

Imetelstat works by targeting the telomerase enzyme to stop uncontrolled cell division and do not grow. This is helpful in treating conditions like myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS).

The recommended dosage of Imetelstat is 7.1 mg/kg given as an intravenous infusion over 2 hours every 4 weeks.

Serious side effects are rare with Imetelstat. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following: Low platelet counts (thrombocytopenia): unusual bleeding or bruising, bleeding that lasts a long time, nosebleeds, vomiting blood, blood in your stools or black tarry stools Low neutrophil counts (neutropenia): signs or symptoms of infection during treatment, including fever, shortness of breath or trouble breathing, cough, chills, or pain or burning when you urinate Infusion-related reactions: sudden increase in blood pressure, stomach pain, joint pain, weakness or fatigue, back and bone pain, diarrhea, redness, headache, not feeling well, chest pain that is not related to your heart

This could affect your ability to get pregnant. Talk to your healthcare provider if this is a concern for you.
