HYZAAR Uses, Side Effects, Interactions, Warnings & Dosing
What is HYZAAR?
HYZAAR is the brand name for losartan/hydrochlorothiazide and is available as an oral tablet.
What dosages is HYZAAR available in?
HYZAAR (losartan/hydrochlorothiazide) is available as an oral tablet that is available in strengths of 50 mg/12.5 mg, 100 mg/12.5 mg, and 100 mg/25 mg.
What is HYZAAR used for?
HYZAAR is an ARB/diuretic (water pill) combo used to treat high blood pressure and to lower the risk of stroke in people with high blood pressure and an enlarged left ventricle of the heart.
How does HYZAAR work?
HYZAAR is a combination of two medications that work together to lower blood pressure:
1. Losartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB). It works by blocking angiotensin II, a hormone that raises your blood pressure, from attaching to its receptors (signaling proteins). In doing so, losartan lowers your blood pressure by relaxing the blood vessels
2. Hydrochlorothiazide is a thiazide diuretic (water pill). It works in your kidneys to remove extra water and certain electrolytes (like sodium and potassium). This helps lower blood pressure
How do I take HYZAAR?
HYZAAR is typically taken by mouth once daily. Your provider will adjust your dose based on how well it’s helping your blood pressure and if you’re having side effects.
Is it safe for me to take HYZAAR?
HYZAAR is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. You should not use this medication if you have anuria or have diabetes and are taking aliskiren.
HYZAAR Common Side Effects
Common side effects of HYZAAR include:
- Upper respiratory tract infection (i.e., common cold)
- Dizziness
- Back pain
- Headache
- Trouble sleeping
- Rash
- Stomach upset
HYZAAR Serious Side Effects
Serious side effects are rare with HYZAAR. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following.
- Dangerously low blood pressure: dizziness, lightheadedness, pale skin, feeling faint
- Serious kidney problems: urinating less often than usual, swelling in your feet, ankles, or hands, unexplained weight gain
- High blood potassium levels: nausea, muscle weakness, abnormal heartbeat
- Severe allergic reaction: swelling of your lips, tongue, throat, or face, trouble breathing, rash
