How does HUMULIN R work?
HUMULIN R is an insulin. Insulin is a hormone that lowers glucose (sugar) levels in the blood. It helps your body absorb and store sugar and fat from your bloodstream after eating a meal.
How do I take HUMULIN R?
- HUMULIN R is injected underneath the skin (subcutaneously) about 30 minutes before each meal. The dose of HUMULIN R is different for each person so your healthcare provider will provide you with directions on how many units of HUMULIN R to inject. The dose depends on whether you’re using it for type 1 diabetes or type 2 diabetes, your weight, how well you respond to insulin, and your blood sugar levels
Is it safe for me to take HUMULIN R?
HUMULIN R is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. You should not use this medication if you have symptoms of hypoglycemia.
HUMULIN R Common Side Effects
Common side effects of HUMULIN R:
- Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia)
- Injection site reactions (e.g., redness, warmth, changes in skin color)
- Lipodystrophy (buildup or loss of fat tissue)
- Weight gain
- Edema (swelling)
- Itchy skin
- Skin rash
HUMULIN R Serious Side Effects
Serious side effects are rare with HUMULIN R. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following.
- Severe hypoglycemia (dangerously low blood sugar): if not treated, severe hypoglycemia can lead to unconsciousness, seizures, and even death
- Severe allergic reactions: rash, hives, swelling of face, tongue, and throat, difficulty breathing
- Dangerously low levels of potassium: if not treated, it can lead to difficulty breathing, irregular heartbeat, and even death
Effects of other drugs, drug classes and over-the-counter products on HUMULIN R
- The following medications may interact with HUMULIN R: Drugs that may increase the risk of hypoglycemia: antidiabetic agents, ACE inhibitors, angiotensin II receptor blocking agents disopyramide, fibrates, fluoxetine, monoamine oxidase inhibitors pentoxifylline, pramlintide, salicylates, somatostatin analog (e.g. octreotide), and sulfonamide antibiotics
- Drugs that may decrease the blood glucose lowering effect: atypical antipsychotics, corticosteroids, danazol, diuretics estrogens, glucagon, isoniazid, niacin, oral contraceptives phenothiazines, progestogens (e.g., in oral contraceptives) protease inhibitors, somatropin, sympathomimetic agents (e.g. albuterol, epinephrine, terbutaline), and thyroid hormones
- Drugs that may increase or decrease the blood glucose lowering effect: alcohol, beta-blockers, clonidine, lithium salts, and pentamidine
- Drugs that may blunt the signs and symptoms of hypoglycemia: beta-blockers, clonidine, guanethidine, and reserpine

Is HUMULIN R safe in pregnancy?
Published studies with HUMULIN R used during pregnancy have not reported an association between insulin lispro and the induction of major birth defects, miscarriage, or adverse maternal or fetal outcomes. If you become pregnant while receiving HUMULIN R, talk to your healthcare provider.
