GATTEX Uses, Side Effects, Interactions, Warnings & Dosing
What is GATTEX?
GATTEX is the brand name for teduglutide and is available as a subcutaneous injection.
What dosages is GATTEX available in?
GATTEX is available as 5 mg of teduglutide in a single-dose vial supplied with 0.5 mL Sterile Water for Injection in a single-dose prefilled syringe.
What is GATTEX used for?
GATTEX is a GLP-2 analog and is used to treat treatment of adults and children ages 1 year and older (and weighing at least 22 lbs) with SBS who are dependent on IV nutrition.
How does GATTEX work?
GATTEX is a glucagon-like peptide-2 (GLP-2) analog. This means it acts like GLP-2, a chemical made by your body. GLP-2 helps more blood to flow to your intestines. It also helps your body absorb nutrients when you eat. People with SBS have damage to their intestines that prevents them from absorbing enough nutrients from the food they eat. This means that many people with SBS have to get their nutrients from a tube placed in their vein (known as IV nutrition). GATTEX helps people with SBS absorb more nutrients through the food they eat and can help lower the amount of IV nutrition they require.
How do I take GATTEX?
The dose of GATTEX depends on your weight. The typical dose is 0.05 mg/kg injected under the skin once daily. Your dose might be lower if you have kidney problems.
Is it safe for me to take GATTEX?
GATTEX is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. You should not use this medication if you have
GATTEX Common Side Effects
Common side effects of GATTEX:
- Stomach pain
- Nausea
- Sore throat, stuffy nose, or cough
- Stomach swelling
- Pain, swelling, or redness at injection site
GATTEX Serious Side Effects
Serious side effects are rare with GATTEX. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following.
- Blockage of the intestines: trouble going to the bathroom or passing gas, stomach pain or swelling, nausea, vomiting
- Blockage of the gallbladder or pancreas: stomach pain and tenderness, chills, fever, a change in your stools, nausea, vomiting, dark urine, yellowing of your skin or the whites of eyes
Effects of other drugs, drug classes and over-the-counter products on GATTEX
Based upon the pharmacodynamic effect of GATTEX, there is a potential for increased absorption of concomitant oral medications. Altered mental status has been observed in patients taking GATTEX and benzodiazepines in the adult clinical studies. Monitor patients on concomitant oral drugs requiring titration or with a narrow therapeutic index for adverse reactions related to the concomitant drug while on GATTEX. The concomitant drug may require a reduction in dosage
