What is FLOXIN OTIC used for?
FLOXIN OTIC is a fluoroquinolone (or “quinolone”) antibiotic that is used to treat outer ear infection (swimmer’s ear) in people ages 6 months and older, middle ear infections in children ages 1 year and older with ear tubes, and long-term middle ear infections in people ages 12 years and older with burst eardrums.
How does FLOXIN OTIC work?
FLOXIN OTIC is a fluoroquinolone (or “quinolone”) antibiotic. It works by blocking certain enzymes (proteins) that bacteria use to grow, repair their genetic material (DNA), and survive. By blocking this process, ofloxacin ear drops kills bacteria.
How do I take FLOXIN OTIC?
FLOXIN OTIC is typically given as 5 to 10 drops into the affected ear(s) once daily for 7 to 14 days, depending on the infection being treated.
Is it safe for me to take FLOXIN OTIC?
FLOXIN OTIC is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. You should not use this medication if you have a history of hypersensitivity to ofloxacin, to other quinolones, or to any of the components in this medication.
FLOXIN OTIC Common Side Effects
Common side effects of FLOXIN OTIC include:
- Pain or irritation where the medication touches the ear
- Itching
- Earache
- “Pins and needles” sensation
- Dizziness
- Headache
FLOXIN OTIC Serious Side Effects
Serious side effects are rare with FLOXIN OTIC. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following.
- Severe allergic reaction: rash, hives, swelling, difficulty breathing, dizziness, fast heartbeat
