Evotaz is a two-drug combination that is part of an antiretroviral (ARV) regimen to treat HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) in adults and pediatric patients weighing at least 35 kg.
How does Evotaz work?
Evotaz contains 2 medications:
- Atazanavir is a protease inhibitor (PI). It prevents HIV from infecting your cells.
- Cobicistat is a “booster” medication. It slows down your body’s metabolism (breakdown) of atazanavir so the atazanavir levels in your blood can remain high.
How do I take Evotaz?
The typical dose of Evotaz is 1 tablet by mouth once a day with food.
Is it safe for me to take Evotaz?
Evotaz is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. You should not use this medication in the following:
- Previous hypersensitivity to atazanavir or cobicistat
- Taking medications that interact with Evotaz

- Jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes)
- Rash
Evotaz Serious Side Effects
Serious side effects are rare with Evotaz. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following:
- Severe skin reaction: red, raised skin areas, rash, blistering, peeling skin
- Heart rhythm problems: feeling dizzy or lightheaded, feeling that your heart skips beats or is pounding
- Kidney stone or gallstone: severe pain in the stomach or sides with nausea or vomiting, difficulty urinating, fever, bloody urine
- High blood sugar levels

Is Evotaz safe in pregnancy?
Evotaz should not be taken during pregnancy. This is because the levels of medication in your blood may be lower during pregnancy and may not control your HIV-1. Talk to your doctor if you are already pregnant or if you have plans on becoming pregnant. They will recommend what is best for you.
