Estring is an estrogen replacement and is used to treat vaginal dryness, burning, and irritation due to menopause.
How does Estring work?
Estring is an estrogen replacement that slowly releases a steady amount of estrogen to your vagina over 3 months. Your body makes a lot less estrogen during menopause, which can cause thinning of your vaginal walls. This can lead symptoms, such as vaginal dryness, burning, and irritation. Replacing estrogen helps relieve these menopausal symptoms.
How do I take Estring?
Estring is dosed as 1 ring inserted into your vagina as far as it can comfortably go. Remove and insert a new ring every 3 months.
Is it safe for me to take Estring?
Estring is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. Estring vaginal ring should not be used in women with any of the following conditions:
- Undiagnosed abnormal genital bleeding
- Known, suspected, or history of cancer of the breast
- Known or suspected estrogen-dependent neoplasia
- Active deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism or a history of these conditions
- Active or recent (within the past year) arterial thromboembolic disease (for example, stroke and myocardial infarction). Known liver dysfunction or disease
- Known hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients in Estring. Known or suspected pregnancy

Common side effects of Estring:
- Headache
- Vaginal discharge
- Back pain
- Vaginal yeast infection
- Vaginal inflammation or irritation
- Vaginal discomfort or pain
- Upper respiratory infection
- Vaginal bleeding
- Bacterial growth in the vagina
- Arthritis
- Trouble sleeping
- Stomach pain
- Nasal congestion
- Nausea
- Flu-like symptoms
Estring Serious Side Effects
Serious side effects are rare with Estring. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following.
- Heart attack: chest pain, cold sweats, left arm pain, difficulty breathing
- Stroke: sudden weakness on one side of your body, bad headaches, trouble breathing, changes in your speech or vision
- Blood clots: legs (pain, swelling, warm to touch, redness), lungs (trouble breathing, chest pain, cough)
Toxic shock syndrome (TSS): fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle pain, dizziness, faintness, sunburn-like rash on face and body - Breast lumps
- Unusual vaginal bleeding
