- Both medications are nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs). They work by blocking an enzyme (protein) called reverse transcriptase, which HIV uses to make copies of itself. By stopping this process, Emtricitabine/Tenofovir Alafenamide (emtricitabine / tenofovir alafenamide) helps prevent the virus from spreading in the body and reduces the risk of infection when used for PrEP.
How do I take Emtricitabine/Tenofovir Alafenamide?
The recommended dosage is as follows:
- Treatment of HIV-1 Infection: One tablet taken once daily with or
- Without food in patients with a body weight of at least 25 kg.
- HIV-1 PrEP: One tablet taken once daily with or without food in those with a body weight at least 35 kg.
