How do I take eluxadoline?
eluxadoline is typically started at 100 mg by mouth twice a day with food. Some people cannot tolerate the 100 mg dose, or may have liver or kidney problems. For these people, the recommended dose is 75 mg by mouth twice a day with food.
Is it safe for me to take eluxadoline?
eluxadoline is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. You should not use this medication if you any of the following applies:
- Patients without a gallbladder
- Known or suspected biliary duct obstruction, or sphincter of Oddi disease or dysfunction
- Alcoholism, alcohol abuse, alcohol addiction, or drink more than 3 alcoholic beverages/day
- A history of pancreatitis; structural diseases of the pancreas, including known or suspected pancreatic duct obstruction
- Patients with a known hypersensitivity reaction to eluxadoline
Severe hepatic impairment (Child-Pugh Class C).
A history of chronic or severe constipation or sequelae from constipation, or known or suspected mechanical gastrointestinal obstruction
