What is Elidel used for?
Elidel is an immunosuppressant and is used to treat eczema (mild to moderate) in adults and children 2 years of age and older.
How does Elidel work?
Elidel is a topical (used on the skin) calcineurin inhibitor. It works by blocking calcineurin, a protein in our bodies that helps activate our immune system. By blocking our immune system response, the inflammation that causes eczema is lessened.
How do I take Elidel?
Apply a thin layer to the affected area(s) twice daily.
Is it safe for me to take Elidel?
Elidel is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you.
Elidel Common Side Effects
Common side effects of Elidel:
- Burning
- Headache
- Cough and/or stuffy or runny nose
- Flu or other viral infection
- Fever
Elidel Serious Side Effects
Serious side effects are rare with Elidel. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following.
- Allergic reaction
- Skin infection
Effects of other drugs, drug classes and over-the-counter products on Elidel
The following medications may interact with Elidel:
- The concomitant administration of known CYP3A family of inhibitors in patients with widespread and/or erythrodermic disease should be done with caution. Some examples of such drugs are erythromycin, itraconazole, ketoconazole, fluconazole, calcium channel blockers and cimetidine
