DRISDOL Uses, Side Effects, Interactions, Warnings & Dosing
What is DRISDOL?
DRISDOL is the brand name for ergocalciferol (vitamin D2) and is available as an oral capsule.
What dosages is DRISDOL available in?
DRISDOL is available as a 50,000 IU oral capsule.
What is DRISDOL used for?
DRISDOL is a dietary supplement and is used to treat hypoparathyroidism (low parathyroid hormone levels), familial hypophosphatemia (genetic condition causing low phosphate levels), and vitamin D-resistant rickets (weakening of the bones caused by low vitamin D).
How does DRISDOL work?
DRISDOL is a form of vitamin D that’s available as a dietary supplement. Vitamin D allows your body to absorb more calcium and phosphate, which is important to keep your bones healthy and strong. If you have problems with your parathyroid gland, your body doesn’t make vitamin D very well on its own. Vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) replaces the vitamin D your parathyroid gland isn’t making.
How do I take DRISDOL?
DRISDOL is typically taken by mouth with dose ranges between 12,000 and 500,000 units (or IU) by mouth every day, depending on the condition.
Is it safe for me to take DRISDOL?
DRISDOL is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. You should not use this medication if you have hypercalcemia, malabsorption syndrome, abnormal sensitivity to the toxic effects of vitamin D, and hypervitaminosis D.
DRISDOL Common Side Effects
- DRISDOL at normal doses usually has no side effects
DRISDOL Serious Side Effects
Serious side effects are rare with DRISDOL. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following.
- High calcium or vitamin D blood levels: loss of appetite, nausea, weakness, weight loss, muscle aches or stiffness, constipation
- Kidney damage: a change in how much or how often you urinate, feeling tired, swelling in your legs or feet

The following medications may interact with DRISDOL:
- Mineral oil interferes with the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins, including vitamin D preparations
- Administration of thiazide diuretics to hypoparathyroid patients who are concurrently being treated with DRISDOL may cause hypercalcemia

Validus Pharmaceuticals
Is DRISDOL safe in pregnancy?
DRISDOL use in excess of the recommended dietary allowance during normal pregnancy should be avoided unless, in the judgment of the physician, potential benefits in a specific, unique case outweigh the significant hazards involved.
