DIFICID is a macrolide antibiotic and is used to treat clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea (commonly called “C. diff”).
How does DIFICID work?
DIFICID belongs to a group of antibiotics called macrolide antibiotics. It treats your infection by targeting C. difficile bacteria and stopping them from producing important nutrients they need to survive.
How do I take DIFICID?
DIFICID is typically dosed as follows:
- Adults: Take 200 mg (1 tablet) by mouth two times a day for 10 days.
- Children over 6 months old (dose based on weight):
- Children weighing more than 12.5 kg (27.5 lbs): Give 200 mg (5 mL) by mouth two times a day for 10 days.
- Children weighing between 9 kg and 12.5 kg (20-27.5 lbs): Give 160 mg (4 mL) by mouth two times a day for 10 days
- Children weighing between 7 kg and 9 kg (15-20 lbs): Give 120 mg (3 mL) by mouth two times a day for 10 days
- Children weighing between 4 kg and 7 kg (9-15 lbs): Give 80 mg (2 mL) by mouth two times a day for 10 days
Is it safe for me to take DIFICID?
DIFICID is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. DIFICID is contraindicated in patients who have known hypersensitivity to
fidaxomicin or any other ingredient in DIFICID.
