How does COREG CR work?
COREG CR is an alpha and beta blocker medication. It lowers blood pressure by relaxing your blood vessels and slowing down your heart rate.
How do I take COREG CR?
COREG CR is typically taken by mouth once daily up to a maximum of 80 mg.
Is it safe for me to take COREG CR?
COREG CR is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. You should not use this medication if you have bronchial asthma or related bronchospastic conditions, second- or third-degree AV block, sick sinus syndrome, severe bradycardia (unless permanent pacemaker in place, are in cardiogenic shock or decompensated heart failure requiring the use of IV inotropic therapy, or have severe hepatic impairment.
COREG CR Common Side Effects
Common side effects of COREG CR include:
- Dizziness
- Orthostatic hypotension (drop in blood pressure when you stand up from sitting or lying down)
- Trouble sleeping
- Diarrhea
COREG CR Serious Side Effects
Serious side effects are rare with COREG CR. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following.
- Severe allergic reaction: skin rash; swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat; difficulty breathing
- Heart failure: trouble breathing, fast weight gain, feeling very tired, chest pain, swelling in the legs, ankles, or feet
- Bronchospasm: tightness in the chest, trouble catching your breath, difficulty breathing, wheezing, cough, dizziness, extreme tiredness
Effects of other drugs, drug classes and over-the-counter products on COREG CR
The following medications may interact with COREG CR:
- CYP P450 2D6 enzyme inhibitors may increase and rifampin may decrease carvedilol levels
- Hypotensive agents (e.g., reserpine, MAO inhibitors, clonidine) may increase the risk of hypotension and/or severe bradycardia
- Cyclosporine or digoxin levels may increase
- Both digitalis glycosides and beta-blockers slow atrioventricular conduction and decrease heart rate. Concomitant use can increase the
- risk of bradycardia
- Amiodarone may increase carvedilol levels resulting in further slowing of the heart rate or cardiac conduction
- Verapamil or diltiazem-type calcium channel blockers may affect ECG and/or blood pressure
- Insulin and oral hypoglycemics action may be enhanced
