How does Colchicine USP work?
Colchicine USP is an anti-inflammatory medication. It blocks cells that cause joint inflammation and pain in people who have gout flares and familial Mediterranean fever.
How do I take Colchicine USP?
Colchicine USP is typically taken by mouth and dosed 1.2 mg (2 tablets) at the first sign of a gout flare followed by 0.6 mg (1 tablet) one hour later to treat gout flares. It can also be taken once or twice daily to prevent gout or treat FMF.
Is it safe for me to take Colchicine USP?
Colchicine USP is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. You should not use this medication if you are taking P-gp or strong CYP3A4 inhibitors and have renal or hepatic impairment. In these patients, life-threatening and fatal Colchicine USP toxicity has been reported with Colchicine USP taken in therapeutic doses.

- Diarrhea
- Nausea
- Tiredness
- Headache
- Throat pain
Colchicine USP Serious Side Effects
Serious side effects are rare with Colchicine USP. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following. Neuromuscular toxicity: Myotoxicity including rhabdomyolysis may occur, especially in combination with other drugs known to cause this effect. Consider temporary interruption or discontinuation of Colchicine USP.
Effects of other drugs, drug classes and over-the-counter products on Colchicine USP
The following medications may interact with Colchicine USP:
- Coadministration of P-gp and/or CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g., clarithromycin or cyclosporine) have been demonstrated to alter the concentration of Colchicine USP
