AIRSUPRA is a SABA/inhaled corticosteroid that is used for the prevention and treatment of asthma flare-ups.
How does AIRSUPRA work?
AIRSUPRA is a combination of two medications.
- Albuterol is a short-acting beta-agonist (SABA). It works by relaxing the muscles around the airways to the lungs. This opens up the lungs and makes breathing easier during an asthma attack
- Budesonide is a corticosteroid. It reduces chemicals in your body that cause swelling and inflammation. Inflammation in your lungs can lead to difficulty breathing. By lowering inflammation, budesonide makes it easier for you to breathe
How do I take AIRSUPRA?
Each inhalation of AIRSUPRA contains 90 mcg of albuterol and 80 mcg of budesonide. The typical dose is 2 inhalations by mouth as needed for asthma symptoms (e.g., shortness of breath, wheezing, cough). Don’t use more than 6 doses (12 inhalations) in a 24-hour period.
Is it safe for me to take AIRSUPRA?
AIRSUPRA is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. You should not use this medication if you have a hypersensitivity to albuterol, budesonide, or to any of the excipients.

Common side effects of AIRSUPRA:
- Headache
- Hoarseness
- Thrush
- Cough
AIRSUPRA Serious Side Effects
Serious side effects are rare with AIRSUPRA. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following.
- Severe allergic reaction: swelling, rash, trouble breathing
Effects of other drugs, drug classes and over-the-counter products on AIRSUPRA
The following medications may interact with AIRSUPRA:
- Strong cytochrome P450 3A4 inhibitors (e.g. ritonavir): Use with caution. May cause systemic corticosteroid effects
- Other short-acting bronchodilators: Use judiciously with other short-acting beta agonists
- Beta blockers: May decrease effectiveness of AIRSUPRA and produce severe bronchospasm. When there are no acceptable alternatives to the use of beta-adrenergic-blocking agents, consider cardioselective beta-blockers
- and use with caution
- Diuretics, or non-potassium-sparing diuretics: May potentiate hypokalemia or ECG changes. Consider monitoring potassium levels with concomitant use
- Digoxin: May decrease serum digoxin levels. Carefully evaluate digoxin levels with concomitant use
- Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI) and tricyclic antidepressants: Use AIRSUPRA with extreme caution with concomitant use

If you are insured with Medicare and the AIRSUPRA drug savings options are not applicable to you and still remain unaffordable, then you can check Medicaid eligibility in your state by following the instructions at HealthCare.gov.

People who qualify for both Medicare and Medicaid are called ‘dual eligibles’.
If you are denied Medicaid for AIRSUPRA, and you are still unable to afford your copay or co-insurance element (for example if you are in the coverage gap or Donut Hole) then you may be eligible for a federal support program like Low Income Subsidy. I am uninsured or underinsured and none of the AIRSUPRA prescription saving options are applicable or affordable for me, what can I do?
If you are uninsured or underinsured (for example, AIRSUPRA is not covered by your plan) and the drug savings options are not applicable or still unaffordable, then you can check Medicaid eligibility in your state by following the instructions at HealthCare.gov.

If your medication is not covered by your plan, you can you can appeal your insurance company’s decision. Sometimes, a formal appeal can result in the drug being covered if it is deemed medically necessary.
