Adacel is an inactivated vaccine that helps your body’s immune system make antibodies to protect you from 3 bacteria that cause conditions like Clostridium tetani (tetanus), Corynebacterium diphtheriae (diphtheria), and Bordatella pertussis (pertussis or whooping cough).
How do I take Adacel?
Adacel is typically dosed as follows:
For routine vaccination:
- Adacel is given at least 5 years after the last dose of the DTaP vaccine or the Td vaccine.
- If you need a second dose of the vaccine, you should get it at least 8 years after your first dose.
Prevention of tetanus after getting a wound:
- The vaccine is given at least 5 years after receiving another tetanus toxoid-containing vaccine.

Adacel is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. - An allergy to any tetanus, diphtheria, or pertussis-containing vaccine (including DT, Td, and DTaP)
- Coma, having seizures for a long time, or lowered level of consciousness within 7 days of a previous dose of a pertussis-containing vaccine

- Serious allergic reaction: hives, rash, swelling of your face, tongue or throat, shortness of breath, and chest pain

- Globulin
- Immunosuppressive therapies, including irradiation, antimetabolites, alkylating agents, cytotoxic
