FAQs

Answers to popular questions about Vagirux

What is Vagirux?

Vagirux is a vaginal tablet containing oestradiol 10 micrograms — the same active ingredient and dose as Vagifem. It is a generic equivalent used to treat vaginal atrophy in postmenopausal women. Vagirux comes with a reusable applicator, unlike Vagifem’s single-use applicators, which makes it more environmentally friendly and cost-effective. It provides the same local oestrogen replacement with minimal systemic absorption.

Is Vagirux the same as Vagifem?

Yes, Vagirux contains the same active ingredient (oestradiol 10 mcg) and is used in exactly the same way as Vagifem. The main differences are the manufacturer, the reusable applicator design, and cost. Clinically, they are equivalent in effectiveness and safety.

How do I use Vagirux?

Insert one tablet into the vagina at bedtime using the reusable applicator. Use daily for the first 2 weeks, then twice weekly for maintenance. Clean the reusable applicator after each use as directed in the patient information leaflet. The applicator can be reused throughout the pack.

What are the side effects of Vagirux?

Side effects are the same as Vagifem: occasional local irritation, itching, or burning. Systemic side effects are negligible due to the ultra-low dose. No progestogen is needed alongside Vagirux.

How can I get Vagirux?

Vagirux is available on NHS prescription from your GP or through NowPatient. As a cost-effective generic with a reusable applicator, it is increasingly prescribed in place of Vagifem.
