About Premique Low Dose

Premique Low Dose is a hormone replacement therapy (HRT), used to treat the symptoms of menopause. It contains two active ingredients, conjugated oestrogens (an estrogen) and medroxyprogesterone acetate (a progesterone).

If only oestrogen levels are increased during HRT treatment, the endometrium would grow excessively, causing an increased risk of endometrial cancer. This is why Premique Low Dose (which contains a progestogen) is prescribed if you have not had a hysterectomy.

Premique Low Dose helps to treat menopausal symptoms such as:

  • Osteoporosis
  • Hot flushes

FAQs

Answers to Popular Questions About Premique Low Dose

What is Premique Low Dose?

Premique Low Dose is a continuous combined HRT containing conjugated equine oestrogens 0.3 mg and medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) 1.5 mg per tablet. It is a lower-dose version of Premique designed for postmenopausal women (at least 12 months since last period) who need combined, bleed-free HRT. It is taken daily without a break.

How does Premique Low Dose differ from standard Premique?

Premique Low Dose contains lower doses of both the oestrogen and progestogen components compared to standard Premique. This reflects the clinical principle of using the lowest effective dose of HRT to minimise side effects and risks while adequately controlling symptoms.

How do I take Premique Low Dose?

Take one tablet daily at the same time, continuously without a break. Swallow with water, with or without food. All tablets are identical.

What are the side effects of Premique Low Dose?

Common side effects include breast tenderness, headaches, nausea, bloating, and mood changes. Breakthrough bleeding may occur in the first 3–6 months. As an oral combined HRT, it carries a small increased risk of VTE and, with prolonged use, breast cancer. Women with VTE risk factors may benefit from switching to transdermal HRT.

Is Premique Low Dose still recommended?

While Premique remains licensed, modern UK guidelines favour body-identical oestradiol-based HRT with micronised progesterone. Premique uses conjugated equine oestrogens and a synthetic progestogen. If you are stable on Premique Low Dose, there is no urgent need to switch, but discuss body-identical alternatives with your prescriber at your next review.

How can I get Premique Low Dose?

Premique Low Dose is available on NHS prescription from your GP or menopause clinic, or through NowPatient’s online service.
